Medicare decisions don’t have to be complicated, but small misunderstandings can lead to big frustrations later. That’s why SGIA Medicare Consulting is here to help.

Here are some of the most common Medicare mistakes we see, and how to protect yourself from them.

Mistake #1: Missing Your Enrollment Window

Many people don’t realize Medicare has strict enrollment periods.

  • Enrolling late in Part B (and sometimes Part A) can lead to permanent penalties

  • Others experience gaps in coverage because they didn’t enroll at the right time

How to avoid it:

  • Understand your Initial Enrollment Period and any Special Enrollment Periods that may apply to you, especially if you’re working at 65 or older.

Mistake #2: Assuming Medicare Covers Everything

Original Medicare does not cover all healthcare costs.

  • There is no annual out-of-pocket maximum

  • Certain services, medications, and extended care may not be fully covered

How to avoid it:

  • Know where cost-sharing exists and whether additional coverage options may be appropriate for your situation. This is often where Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans come into consideration.

Mistake #3: Not Understanding When Medigap Fits In

Medigap plans are designed to work alongside Original Medicare to help cover costs like deductibles, coinsurance, and copays, but timing matters

  • Medigap is only available to those enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)

  • The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins when you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Part B

  • Enrolling later may require medical underwriting, which can affect eligibility or cost

How to avoid it:

  • Understand whether Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan or a Medicare Advantage plan aligns better with your healthcare needs, budget, and preferences. Our Benefit Consultants can help explain how these options differ and when Medigap may be appropriate.

Mistake #4: Choosing a Plan Based Only on Monthly Premium

Low premiums can be appealing, but they don’t always tell the full story.

  • Copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and networks all affect total yearly cost

  • Prescription coverage varies widely by plan

How to avoid it:

  • Look at the whole picture: doctors, medications, travel needs, and long-term healthcare expectations, not just the monthly premium.

Mistake #5: Not Reviewing Coverage as Health Needs Change

Medicare plans and personal health needs can change from year to year.

  • Doctors may leave networks

  • Medications may change tiers or costs

  • Benefits and premiums can be adjusted annually

How to avoid it:

  • Review your coverage regularly and reassess during the Annual Election Period, even if you’re happy with your current plan. Our Benefit Consultants are here to help at any time.

Mistake #6: Trying to Navigate Medicare Alone

Medicare rules are detailed, and online information can feel overwhelming or conflicting.

  • What applies to one person may not apply to another

  • Small details can make a big financial difference

How to avoid it:

  • Work with our trusted SGIA Medicare Benefit Consulting team that understands the rules and explains options clearly, all based on your needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Medicare isn’t just about enrolling; it’s about enrolling correctly. A little guidance upfront can help you avoid penalties, surprises, and unnecessary stress later.

If you’d like help reviewing your Medicare options, understanding whether Medigap or other coverage fits into your plan, or want help before, during, and after enrollment, the SGIA Medicare Consulting team is here to support you, at no cost to you. Subscribe to our weekly Blog for more!
